Who is François Letexier, the referee for Borussia Dortmund vs Barcelona in the UCL today?

In the Champions League, Borussia Dortmund will host Barcelona at Signal Iduna Park on matchday six of the competition phase.

Referee François Letexier will be in charge of today's Champions League match between Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona as both teams try to move one step closer to qualifying for the last 16.

Dortmund and Barça both go into matchday six in the top eight of the new Champions League competition phase, having each won four games and lost one of their opening five games.

Of the 36 teams in the revamped opening phase of the tournament, the first eight finishers will automatically qualify for the knockout phase proper, while the teams in ninth to 24th place will have to negotiate a play-off round.

Who is François Letexier?

Letexier, an official who made his French top-flight debut in 2016, is now in his fifth season as a Champions League referee and is becoming an increasingly well-known figure in high-profile matches. Most recently, the 35-year-old was the man in the middle in Liverpool's 2-0 win over defending champions Real Madrid on matchday five of this season's league stage.

Letexier's 15 Champions League appearances also include two quarter-final matches involving Barca's arch-rivals: Madrid's 3-3 draw with Manchester City last season and Los Blancos' 2-0 win over Chelsea in 2022/2023.

Elsewhere in European club competition, Letexier was named to the 2023 UEFA Super Cup, which saw City beat Sevilla on penalties.

At international level, the Frenchman made history at the European Championships this summer when he became the youngest referee to officiate at the tournament's final. Aged 35 years and 82 days when he took charge of Spain's victory over England in Berlin, Letexier surpassed the previous record set by Anders Frisk, who was 37 at Euro 2000.

Letexier has never crossed paths with Barça before, but has overseen two Dortmund games in the Champions League, both resounding group stage wins for the Germans. He was in charge of BVB's 5-0 defeat to Turkish side Besiktas in 2021, before refereeing the team's 3-0 win over FC Copenhagen the following year.

Who is the VAR for Dortmund vs Barcelona?

The video assistant referee (VAR) will be Dutchman Dennis Higler, and the assistant VAR will be Poland's Tomasz Kwiatkowski.

Letexier's all-French field team is supplemented by assistant referees Cyril Mugnier and Mehdi Rahmouni, and fourth official Jérémy Stinat.
