Mykhailo Mudryk has been provisionally suspended from football after a positive drug test.
The Chelsea winger had missed the Blues' last five games, including the win over Brentford.
Mudryk's absence was originally attributed to illness. His last appearance was against Heidenheim in the Europa Conference competition, where he scored for the Blues, but it appears his absence is related to the investigation.
Speaking to reporters before the 4-3 win over Spurs, Maresca said: 'The other one [to miss out] who is still ill is Misha Mudryk and the rest are doing well.'
At this stage the actual drug is unknown.
Despite his high price tag, Mudryk has spent much of his time at Chelsea on the periphery, so who exactly is their Ukrainian talent?
Where does Mychailo Mudryk come from?
Mykhailo Mudryk was born on January 5, 2001 in Berestyn, Kharkiv Oblast, Ukraine.
Where did Mykhailo Mudryk start his career?
Mykhailo Mudryk started his football career in his native Ukraine, where he started in the Metalist Kharkiv academy.
In 2014, Mudryk joined Dnipro, where he quickly rose through the age groups of their academy and attracted the interest of Shakhtar Donetsk.
He would join Shakhtar's academy in 2016, where he would remain and eventually play in their under-21 team in the 2018–19 season.
It was during that season that he made his first-team debut for Ukraine against Olimpik Donetsk in the Ukrainian Cup, aged just 17.
Who has Mykhailo Mudryk played for in his senior career?
Mykhailo Mudryk made his breakthrough for Shakhtar Donetsk's senior team during the 2021 season.
But that came after two loan spells at the club, first at Arsenal Kiev during the 2019 season.
He made ten appearances for the side and failed to score during his time at the club.
He was then loaned out to Desna Chernihiv, where he made 11 appearances for the Ukrainian Premier League, where he again failed to find the back of the net.
Following the arrival of Roberto de Zerbi in 2021, Mudryk began to find his feet at Shakhtar after the former recalled him from his loan spell.
It was in the Champions League where he really stood out during the 2022/2023 season, scoring three times in Shakhtar's group stage matches.
He also scored seven goals and added seven assists in twelve league games, earning him Ukrainian Footballer of the Year.
That form saw him join Chelsea in the January 2023 transfer window for a fee of £88 million.
He made his debut for the Blues in the 0-0 draw against Liverpool, where he impressed fans and pundits.
He did not make his first start until early February, and Mudryk had to wait until his 24th appearance to score his first competitive goal for the side.
Perhaps his most memorable moment in a Chelsea shirt to date came against Arsenal, when his cross shot evaded David Raya and found the far corner in Chelsea's eventual 2-2 draw against their London rivals.
What did Mykhailo Mudryk say about the positive drug test?
“I can confirm that I have been informed that a sample I provided to the FA contained a banned substance,” Mudryk posted on Instagram.
'This came as a complete shock as I have never knowingly used banned substances or broken any rules, and I am working closely with my team to investigate how this could have happened.
'I know I have done nothing wrong and remain hopeful that I will be back on the field soon. “I can't say more now due to the confidentiality of the process, but I will do it as soon as possible (blue heart emoji).”
