The festive season is usually a time to give and 2024 was no different for the 41-year-old boss Carlos Corberan. The former West Bromwich Albion manager made the decision to exchange a play -off bid in the EFL championship to return to his native Valencia in December, so that everything he has to do his hometown club in Spain in La Liga keep.
After his first ten games that are in charge, a 50% profit percentage is a fantastic start for life at the Mestalla.
Valencia's reaction to their 7-1 hammering in Barcelona has been impressive. They won their next two home games against Celta Vigo and Leganes. The Corberan team was picked up further in the 2023/24 season. They were comfortable one of the most physical sides in the division. West Brom was not afraid to play the percentages and their defensive record was incredibly tight.
Corberan was back in the EFL Championship Play-Offs with Albion at the end of the 2023/24 campaign, this time Hoorns locks with Southampton in the semi-final. Unfortunately for him and the baggies, Southampton's former Premier League quality eventually shone, so that the Saints brought to a play -off final that they would eventually win against Leeds.
A top six finish was seen as a wonderful achievement for Corberan, taking into account the lack of resources of Albion and the power of the teams that occupy the top spots. At the beginning of 2024/25, Corberan was keen to achieve the same success again.
When Valencia came to call Ruben Baraja, Albion was in seventh position, despite the fact that their play budget was reduced by 30% for 2024/25.
Corberan's qualities for the Mestalla Hot-Seat
There is no doubt that Corberan's organizational qualities were one of the best in the EFL championship. For the past 18 months, West Brom has been a team that is better than the sum of its parts. This is largely due to the structured style of Corberan, which offers teams few opportunities for scoring goals. It is proof of his hawthorns that Albion had a +38 target difference with his 107 games that are in charge.
Corberan also coached Albion to become a very intelligent team -based team, knowing when he had to press high on the field. This is a quality that is good in line with some of the best eras in Valencia, such as Unai Emery and Rafael Benitez.
The financial restrictions on Valencia CF are now no secret. They are increasingly leaning on their academy, with midfielders Diego Lopez, Fran Perez and Javi Guerra all come through the ranks. Corberan has a strong track record of improving young talents, as evidenced by his work with Bielsa at Leeds, followed by Huddersfield and West Brom.
It also helps that Corberan understands Spanish football and, more importantly, the importance of Valencia deeply. He represented the B team of Valencia before he continued to Burjassot and Ribarroja prior to his retirement in favor of a coaching career. Corberan is also no stranger to the uncertainty of the boardroom, so the somewhat chaotic property of Peter Lim should offer few surprises.
If Corberan Valencia can send away from the drop zone, his reputation will certainly reach even greater heights.
