Gianluigi Donnarumma has revealed the reason that he returned to the dressing room of Paris Saint-Germain prior to their penalty shoot-out Triumph against Liverpool on Tuesday evening.
The French champions booked their place in the quarterfinals of the Champions League after a dramatic collision with Liverpool.
The side of Luis Enrique had left 1-0 last week of the first stage in Paris, but brought the draw at Anfield through an usmane dembele effort.
The Parisians eventually achieved a 4-1 victory for penalties against Liverpool, with Donnarumma savings from Darwin Nunez and Curtis Jones.
Prior to the penalty shoot-out, the Italian keeper had left the field to return to the dressing room, while his teammates received instructions from Boss Luis Enrique.
Donnarumma spoke with Sky Italia after the game and initially jokes about the reason before he explained that he had prepared definitive preparations with his goalkeeper coach.
“I had to pee,” said Donnarumma.
“I am kidding, I had prepared something with my trainer, it was good to take something back to try to save some penalties.”
The preparations for Donnarumma eventually paid off, with the goalkeeper correctly chose the right way to keep out the efforts of Nunez and Jones.
The 26-year-old then chose to shoot back on his critics, after he was viewed by some to have been blamed for Harvey Elliott's goal in the first stage.
Last week Donnarumma had received a hand of Elliott's efforts, but could not prevent the liverpool strike from found the corner.
“I see a lot of criticism from journalists, if you can call them like that, without knowing what the goalkeeper's task is,” said Donnarumma.
'In the first stage we admitted a shot and a goal, it seemed like it was my fault, but I always think of smiling, doing my best and working for the team.
'I am happy with the performance of the team because we knew how to suffer, coming to this stadium here is not easy at all, it is always very difficult and especially to destroy the defeat of the first stage.
“We played a great game and I am very happy with the passage to the next round.”
After he had eliminated Liverpool, who ended the top of the competition phase of the competition, PSG emerged as one of the favorites for the Champions League.
The Luis Enrique side will meet the winners of the last 16 between Aston Villa and Club Brugge.
Aston Villa currently leads 3-1 of the first stage and will secure a place in the quarterfinals on Wednesday evening.
