Why is Thibaut Courtois not playing for Real Madrid against Celta Vigo today in the Copa del Rey?

The first-choice goalkeeper was left out of Ancelotti's squad ahead of the match.

Real Madrid will be without first-choice goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois for the Copa del Rey match against Celta de Vigo on Thursday evening, as Ancelotti left him out of the squad.

Following his surprise omission from the list the day before the match, fans tried to find out whether or not the Belgian had suffered an injury during the catastrophic disaster that was the Spanish Super Cup final in Saudi Arabia, in which Barcelona defeated Madrid as a coconut and crush them 2-5.

Why doesn't Courtois play for Real Madrid?

However, the fans' high-pitched buzz came to a halt when it was announced that Thibaut Courtois had simply been left out of the Copa del Rey squad due to fatigue, with the stopper having played extensively in recent weeks.

As such, Andriy Lunin will take his place between the sticks and look to prevent an Iago Aspas-less Celta side from making a mark on the 360° scoreboard at the stadium.

The match between Real Madrid and Celta will be played on Thursday, January 16 at the Santiago Bernabéu with kick-off at 3:30 PM ET / 12:30 PM PT. ESPN Deportes will broadcast the game to fans in the US. Watch Real Madrid vs Celta live on FuboTV, which offers a free trial.
