Stefan Ortega was surprisingly chosen by Pep Guardiola to start at Anfield, with Ederson coming on as a substitute.
Manchester City are currently in the midst of a dreadful run of form, with their midweek Champions League tie against Feyenoord seeing them surrender a 3-0 lead after five straight defeats. And goalkeeper Ederson is the man who paid the price.
The Brazilian was a shock omission from Pep Guardiola's starting line-up in Sunday's Premier League match against Liverpool, with regular back-up Stefan Ortega opting to start in goal.
While many would have instinctively thought that Ederson had suffered an injury, the fact that he was named as a substitute for the match at Anfield confirmed that this was not the case.
Speaking to British TV channel Sky Sports before kick-off, Guardiola revealed (sort of) why he had chosen to change goalkeepers for one of the biggest games of the season.
“We just wanted to change something. Eddy saved a lot of goals for us. He has saved many, many times one-on-one, but I decided to choose Stefan (Ortega Moreno) today.
“They are both incredible top goalkeepers, they are both great with their feet and one-on-one.”
