‘Wild behavior’… Fans mock Colby Covington as he kisses a Donald Trump gold chain during UFC Tampa arrival

Colby Covington took his admiration for US President-elect Donald Trump to another level ahead of the UFC Tampa main event.

Colby Covington's turnaround is partly due to his unwavering fandom of Donald Trump, both in and out of politics. Although he doesn't have a good reputation among most of his fighting peers, he has an avid UFC fan in Trump, who attended Covington's last title fight at UFC 296.

Ahead of his showdown with Joaquin Buckley in the main event, Covington boasted his usual confident personality as he arrived at Amalie Arena in Tampa. No stranger to main event bookings, it was Covington's first UFC Fight Night appearance since a victory over Tyron Woodley in September 2020.

Despite the smaller stage, Covington dressed to impress on Saturday night. As spotted by the UFC's cameramen, Covington wore a Trump-themed gold chain, complete with a “Make America Great Again” hat, and kissed it for possible luck in the cage.

Fans scratch their heads as Colby Covington kisses Donald Trump during UFC Tampa

It didn't take long for the clip to go viral on social media, and many fans had a lot to say about Covington and his attire on X.

“He reminds me of the 'please save me Donald Trump' guy,” one fan commented.

“Wild behavior.”

'So strange, if Donald Trump finds out about this. He will be disappointed. I also think he decided not to come this weekend because of the Colby fight [LAUGHS].”

“A grown man treating another grown man like he's a god….”

“I also remember my first crush.”

“The kissing is crazy [LAUGHS].”

Unfortunately, Trump was not in attendance at UFC Tampa this weekend as he is weeks away from returning to the White House. Trump won a second term as US president by defeating Vice President Kamala Harris in the 2024 US general election.

Colby Covington looks to secure another welterweight title

Covington is in a must-win situation at UFC Tampa against Buckley. Another loss could potentially eliminate him from the title picture altogether, amid a growing group of new contenders in the mix.

Before UFC Tampa, Covington lost by unanimous decision to Leon Edwards at UFC 296. Trump was sidelined when Covington suffered a leg injury in the opening minutes and couldn't withstand Edwards' output on the feet.

Covington is looking to regain the MMA form that saw him win victories over the likes of Jorge Masvidal, Robbie Lawler and Rafael dos Anjos. He is 0-3 in straight UFC title fights, including two losses to Kamaru Usman.

Despite Covington's years of Trump fandom, he is not the favorite fighter of the new 47th US president. That title may belong to Khabib Nurmagomedov, although Covington offered an interesting theory behind that choice.
