Will Aurélien Tchouaméni play for Real Madrid vs Athletic Club in LaLiga?

Tchouaméni has not played for Real Madrid since the beginning of November, but is back in the selection battle.

Real Madrid midfielder Aurélien Tchouaméni will be back in action tomorrow when Los Blancos visit Athletic Club in the first of five straight games for the Spanish and European champions.

Where does Tchouaméni play for Madrid?

Tchouaméni missed Madrid's last four matches due to an ankle injury, but resumed training on Monday and is in the club's squad for the LaLiga trip to Bilbao. “He looks really good,” Madrid head coach Carlo Ancelotti told reporters today. “He is fit to play from scratch.”

It remains unclear whether Tchouaméni will immediately return to the Madrid starting line-up at San Mamés, and in what position Ancelotti wants to use him.

After centre-back Éder Militão suffered a torn cruciate ligament early last month, Tchouaméni was initially expected to play as a makeshift defender on his return from injury. However, youth product Raúl Asencio has performed well in central defense in recent weeks, and with Eduardo Camavinga in Madrid's sick bay, Tchouaméni may be needed more urgently in midfield.

“Aurélien has shown how useful he can be defensively, both as a central defender and as a midfielder,” Ancelotti said today. “He is a very important player for us, because he also gives us height in set pieces. That is an important part of the game and we are struggling with it.”

Until he damaged his ankle in Madrid's Champions League defeat to AC Milan, Tchouaméni was almost always present this season. The 24-year-old had completed just one match – September's LaLiga win at Real Sociedad, which he missed due to a foot problem. Of the fifteen appearances he made this season, fourteen were as a starter.

Who is injured at Real Madrid?

While Tchouaméni is fit again, Madrid heads to the Basque Country with an injury list that includes not only Militão and Camavinga (hamstrings), but also Vinícius Júnior (hamstring), David Alaba (ACL) and Dani Carvajal (ACL).
