Manchester City and Bayern Munich can be set for disappointment of the transfer, because Florian Wirtz reportedly decided his future.
– Wirtz could sign an extension at Leverkusen
– His new deal can be valid until 2028
– Man City & Bayern may have to wait longer
According to Sport Bild, Wirtz is expected to make his final decision at the beginning of April, and the current instructions suggest that his preference is to stay with Leverkusen. His family, who also serves as his advisers, believe that a movement after the 2026 World Cup would be cheaper for his career.
If Wirtz connects his future to Leverkusen, the club is planning to offer him a contract extension until 2028. The new deal is said to contain a release clause set at around € 125 million (£ 105 million/$ 136 million), which would become active in 2026. Leverkusen retains control over the future of Wirtz. If Wirtz decides to leave earlier than 2026, Leverkusen is said to demand at least € 150 million (£ 126 million/$ 164 million) for his services.
While Bayern may have trouble meet the financial requirements of a potential Wirtz transfer, the city remains strong contenders. The Premier League champions are reportedly not made by the hefty price tag and can pursue the German international when the time is ripe. Moreover, Real Madrid is another club that closely monitors the situation. With Luka Modric who is approaching the twilight of his career, the Spanish giants Wirtz consider a long -term midfield solution. With his reported preference to stay in Germany for the time being, every immediate step seems unlikely.
Although the European Elite clubs will undoubtedly continue to follow the situation of Wirtz, it seems likely that every movement will have to wait until after the World Cup 2026 – unless someone is willing to reach the steep appreciation of Leverkusen in the summer.
