Wojciech Szczesny issues firm message over Barcelona debut saga

Wojciech Szczesny will not turn to Hansi Flick and demand a debut in Barcelona in January.

The club opted to trigger a La Liga rule to sign the experienced Polish goalkeeper in October following a season-ending injury to number 1 Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

With Ter Stegen out for the rest of the campaign, Barcelona were able to sign him out of La Liga, with part of his salary used for Szczesny.

Despite being brought in as an experienced figure, the 34-year-old is yet to feature, more than two months after retiring.

Flick has kept his promise to keep alternate stopper Inaki Pena in place and has impressed as cover for Ter Stegen.

Despite the lack of action, Szczesny insists he is comfortable with the situation as he waits for an opportunity.

“When will I make my debut? Don't know. I said from the beginning that I had to get back in shape first, and that was the most important thing,” said an interview with Eleven Sports.

“Now I feel completely ready to play, physically and mentally, but I understand what is happening.

“If I was a manager I would have played the same number of games as I have done so far. It's hard to get frustrated because I agree 100% with the situation.”

With Barcelona in action in both the Spanish Super Cup and Copa del Rey in early 2025, Szczesny is expected to make his late bow in January.
