Women Super League final day: From champions Chelsea to relegated Crystal Palace

The super league title of the ladies may be Chelsea's again, but there were many more stories that contributed to a fascinating season 2024-25. From signing sessions to plaque, Sky Sports analyzes the best of them.

Manager rotation

The season of fired. Five managers were changed when the number of long -term coaches in the division decreased. March was the most extraordinary month, with three stools quickly in succession.

Liverpool separated roads with Matt Beard, Crystal Palace announced the departure of Laura Kaminski, while Manchester City took the shock decision for Gareth Taylor days before the competition of the League Cup in Bijlen, that city lost to Chelsea – Keeping Bizarre Timing.

Arsenal and Aston Villa chose to make changes to the campaign much earlier. Jonas Eidevall ran in October after a poor form of form made for icy relationships with Gunners fans – something that he later called 'a cloud' about the heads of his players. Renee Sleers, the former No 2 of Eidevall, has started the ship well since he came up.

In the meantime, Robert De Pauw Aston Villa left in December after a pretty disastrous spell of six months, who only claimed six points of their opening of nine games this season. Marc Skinner from Manchester United is now the longest serving manager in the WSL.

Can someone beat Chelsea?

Chelsea's decade of dominance has continued in a remarkable way. They won their sixth consecutive WSL title (and eighth general) by beating Manchester United 1-0 in April-the earliest, the competition has been decided since 2018-19.

After also claiming the League Cup this period, the blues have now won 16 major trophies – all since 2015.

This season has been another exhibition of inevitability of the ruling champions. A memory of anyone who suggested that their crown could slip after the end of the Emma Hayes era that the established hierarchy is no less immobile.

The tag 'Invincibles' is still to play for, because the side of Sonia Bompastor aims to become the first team that is undefeated during a 22-game campaign. No added stimulus needed, but for some extra herbs: beat Liverpool on Saturday, live on Sky Sports and Chelsea would also set a new WSL point record (60).

Summer signs blind

There was enough smart business done by clubs last summer, but these five mainly attracted attention.

Caldentey must be the headline act of those mentioned. And if you have to convince, look at her Screamer in Arsenal's recent European victory over Lyon. Right player.

The 29-year-old arrived from Barcelona with the reputation of a world butcher and has given more than such an esteem. Only Alessia Russo has been directly involved in more goals for Arsenal – and goals are not even the best part.

She excels in almost every creative category, a player who effortlessly slides over a football field and can hurt you from all corners. Play her as a winger, in the no. 10 pocket or an in -depth midfielder – she can do the lot. SLESSEN rightly calls her “Total Football”.

What's going down?

A year after the joyful scenes of a memorable championship winning season, Crystal Palace is back where they started.

After only achieving two victories – at least two less than any other side in the division – it is no wonder. A return of 10 points of 21 games will simply not cut it.

Palace is the third team that only manages Stint in the WSL – which introduced relegation in 2014 – behind Doncaster Belles (2016) and Bristol City (2024).

Liverpool, who conquered the championship title in 2022 and is now considered a stable top-flight outfit, can be considered a wise model to follow as Palace is planning to achieve an immediate return.

Brighton the surprise act

Most seasons give a surprise act and this year was Brighton.

They were tipped to be banned for a ball that was kicked, with Opta made them favorites to go down (26.6 percent). Fast forward to now and they are almost assured of fifth place. Stay in your supercomputer and smoke it!

In the summer, Dario Vidosic joined Melbourne City and has been somewhat revelation, while experienced campaigners Fran Kirby and Nikita Parris both have been a pleasure to watch in a team that preferably, possession, possession.

The year did Manchester change color?

City has long been conquerors of Manchester. They are the club closest to the main trophy to Chelsea (seven) in the past decade, albeit in one way of the supreme blues in general.

But this has been an eventful year for the wrong reasons. Injuries have destroyed their best talents – including Bunny Shaw, Lauren Hemp, Alex Greenwood, Viv Miedema and most recently Mary Fowler.

Nick Cushing was placed in interim in March after the resignation of Taylor – the club that called performance -related reasons – but the move did not have the desired effect. An argument can be put forward for the circumstances that actually deteriorate.

They lost at home and away in the Manchester Derby for the first time in their history. They were dumped from three separate games by Chelsea in the same 12 -day period. And they also missed the European qualification.

Compared this season at the same stage until the last, City has the biggest negative difference between the points won on each side (-12, 52 versus 40). A summer reset cannot come fast enough.

Progress in Europe

Although the way of Chelsea's semi -final defeat against Barcelona – an 8-2 demolition lane over two legs – perhaps has taken the shine of things, it is clear that the gap in the class between the best of the WSL and the European elite is starting to beg.

The last four of this year only contain two English parties for the third time (also 2017-18 and 2022-23). Arsenal are of course finalists, who set aside champions Lyon eight times. It is their first crack in European glory for 18 years.

Holders Barca will now compete for a fifth year in a row in the showpiece in Lisbon and remain hotfavorites. Yet Arsenal are a different proposition among slossers – a much more complete team. And let's not forget that they have a family tree themselves.

Perhaps this is the year that the WSL is finally Europe, shows its power.
