Wrexham co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mcelhenney had to turn to an earlier transfer tactic in an attempt to help the Parkinson's side to get deals over the line
Wrexham has had to make a U-turn by engaging their A-list owners to seal crucial signing sessions while the competition in the transfer market is heating. Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mcelhenney sometimes had to be involved in convincing players to participate when they first took over the Welsh Club in February 2021 because it was in the National League.
Their hands-on approach included charming important goals over the phone, a strategy that is fruit with high-profile recordings such as Paul Mullin of Cambridge United in July 2021.
With Wrexham who drove the wave of success with three back-to-back promotions that brought them to the championship, club director Shaun Harvey revealed in May that the personal approaches of the actors were no longer needed with players who are now in line to participate.
The former EFL director said about the Fearless in Devotion Fan Podcast: “Rob and Ryan all speak, but it is usually afterwards. They spoke with Paul Mullin famous to tell him that they were serious.
“When we were in the National League, they had to become more involved to convince players that this was not just a scam. They don't have to play a phone call now to tell players that we are serious.
“They can see that themselves. The agents are calling us now, so that we don't have to use them that much.”
But rapidly three months, and with manager Phil Parkinson is preparing to build a team that is suitable for the second layer, he has revealed that the co-owners had to reach at least one potential summer signature.
Speaking with New Zealand News Outlet -he said: “We want to sign a player and we have a lot of competition to get the signature. I spoke to Rob and Ryan about it so that they also made a call to the player, explained the back stall and why we wanted them.”
Although the identity of the target remains under wraps, Wrexham is linked this summer to various controversial stars. They include Leicester -legend Jamie Vardy, Fulham -Schipper Tom Cairney and former West Ham -pair Aaron Cresswell and Danny ings.
So far, Parkinson's has welcomed two new faces during the current transfer window. Plymouth striker Ryan Hardie was the first to participate on June 16, while Leicester City goalkeeper Danny Ward signed Tuesday.
The plea of Parkinson's for Reynolds and the involvement of Mcelhenney comes after Wrexham was warned that the replication of their recent triumphs will be quite a challenge next season. The warning was hit by football financing Guru Kieran Maguire Parly because of the presence of countless billionaire club owners in the championship.
Maguire said speaking on the second podcast: “I think the big problem for them is that you are against a number of beautiful seniors. You are up to clubs where the owners have been very happy to have put £ 300,000 to £ 400,000 a week such as Steve Gibson in Middlesbrough.
“Even people like Preston and Milwall have lost £ 1 million a month. Suddenly it becomes a completely different beast. Yes, they will be connected to some big names, but at the same time they will not find it that easy.”
