Bayer Leverkusen -manager Xabi Alonso could probably walk into every vacancy job in European football this summer, but the only job he wants remains dressed in uncertainty until the end of the season. The Basque manager was tipped hard to take over from Carlo Ancelotti in Real Madrid, the club where he was as a player and then started his coaching career as a manager under 19 years old.
Ancelotti has a contract until 2026, but Real Madrid can decide to fire him if he does not take home the Liga title or the Champions League this season. However, they will not make a decision about the last year of his deal until it becomes clear. Although Alonso is generally considered his successor, and there has been contact between Los Blancos and his camp, Bayer Leverkusen would like to get an answer from Alonso, so that they can continue to plan for next season.
Alonso also has a contract until the end of next season, but there is an agreement with CEO Fernando Carro that he can leave when Real Madrid comes to call. According to Diario AS, Alonso will explain his plans for next season in a press conference at 14:30 CEST on Thursday, where he will take questions from the media about the collision of Leverkusen with VfL Bochum. They also say it has leaked that Alonso will announce that he will stay in the German club next season.
