The winners of the Euro 2024 defeated Ronald Koeman's side to the penalties after a 5-5 draw on aggregated over two legs, so that a semi-final confrontation with France was set up on 5 June.

The second stage was 2-2 in a normal time thanks to a brace from Mikel Oyarzabal and strikes by Memphis Depay and Ian Maatsen.

Yet former Real Madrid and Spurs midfielder Van der Vaart launched a surprise attack on the wing player after the first stage, burning him “Superficial”, claiming that he struggled against left-back Jorrel Hato and criticized how low he wore his shorts.

“These are things that I notice: I see things that start to disturb me a little. Pants a little lower, not much effort, gestures a bit superficial,” said Van der Vaart on NOS.

“That is when I think: if you are so young, you have to be happy with every minute you play for Spain.

“No matter how good you are, at that age you have to prove it every minute and in every game. But that does not change the fact that Hato just had him in his pocket.”
