‘You don’t become a bad player overnight’ – Johnson supports Palmer

Former Chelsea defender Glen Johnson has supported Cole Palmer to overcome his fall in the shape.

Palmer and Chelsea have hit the buffers since the new year, with his drop-off together with the death of their title challenge.

The 22-year-old has to contribute a competition help in 2025, while he has only scored twice since the turn of the year. For comparison, he became second for the goals of the Premier League goals between August and December, after he scored 12 and helped six goals.

His shot conversion rate has since fallen from 17.65% to just 5.88%, and he also missed a penalty for the first time in his career when he saw an attempt against Leicester City earlier in March.

But according to Johnson, it is not necessary to panic because he suggested that people have to acknowledge that players go through dips from time to time.

“You don't become a bad player at night and everyone has dips in shape,” he told statistics.

“To be honest for him, he almost has Chelsea on his shoulders almost, almost. I think it would be a shame to show him fingers now because he is not entirely at the same level if he was a few months ago. But he bounces back.

“It might be too much playing time, he may feel a bit long -legged towards the end of the season. But no, he is a world -class player and if they still get a few around him, I am sure he will bounce back.”

No Cole Palmer for Chelsea today, because he misses their game at Arsenal.

This season, Chelsea scored 53 goals in the Premier League – 20 of them were scored or assisted by Palmer (38%). https://t.co/rnfgpfrta1

Palmer has played 78 games for Chelsea in all competitions since he came from Manchester City in 2023 and has registered 62 target contributions for the blues.

According to Johnson, he is the most important man of Chelsea and can strengthen his status as a world -class player with more experience.

“Of course you want to see it for a few more seasons, but it is not easy to wear a team and he did it,” he said.

“That is no lack of respect for the others, but they have not been completely to that level.

“They are now picking up, but he wins games and when she is. So I think he does that at that level, is impressive.”

Chelsea was advertised as potential title candidates before Christmas, but the best blues can hope for placing the competition is a push for the Champions League.

“I think they are almost there. They showed a glimpse of this year where they compete and do some really good performance, but it's just a bit inconsistent,” said Johnson.

“I think they are buzzing to be where they are currently in the competition and if they can hold on to it, it will be a great season.

“I think they have taken steps in the right direction. I think they are not too far away with a little more consistency.”
