Youri Tielemans reveals Aston Villa’s next move after heroic Champions League exit

Aston Villa -Midfielder confused by the final of the heroic defeat against PSG, but believes that the men of Unai Emery will now be inspired to produce a large finish for their Premier League campaign

Youri Tielemans admitted that their heroic Champions League failure Aston Villa players has given an extra incentive to produce a grandstand -finish for the Premier League season. Tielemans scored the goal that caused a remarkable Villa-Vechtback against Paris St Germain, which eventually just fell short in the quarterfinals with extra time.

And the Belgian midfielder says that the narrow defeat over two legs against the French champions has given him and his teammates an always sharper taste for big nights on the European stage.

He said: “After a night like this you want more, you want to be back next season. That is the goal, you always want more. We will give everything to do that. It is up to us to keep pushing and being back next season.”

Tielemans said that he did not 'understand' why there was only three minutes of added time in that dramatic second stage and explained: “Everyone looked at each other because there had been replacements, goals, they also took the time. To be honest, I really don't understand why it was only three minutes. It was what it is.”

However, Tielemans also admitted that he was 'disappointed' that Villa could not complete an unlikely Vechtback. But he thinks their efforts showed the spirit that has developed under Unai Emery.

He said: “I think the team was really good, the character was really good, the mentality was good. That is the mentality we need.

“If we want more and if we want to compete against these parties, we must have that mentality to always stay in the game, try to come back and give everything.

“We really believed that we could get another one and we had a few chances that we should have been more clinical to stay in the game. Unfortunately we did not score.

“It is true that their keeper also made a number of really good saves and credit for them, but we must be more clinical. I think there was more to us.”

Tielemans and his teammates will soon have to disappoint the disappointment of their exit from Champions League. On Saturday evening they have a Crunch Premier League match in Villa Park against Newcastle United, rivals for a top five finish.

“We know how strong we can be at home,” Tielemans said. “We have brilliant support and we know that we can do everything with the fans behind us.”

Due to the consequences of the qualification for next season's Champions League, there will be an impact on Villa's summer spending and their ability to hold on-Loan-Stars Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio. And Tielemans would like to recognize the impact of the Manchester United player and the Paris Saintt Germain player.

He said: “At that time (many injuries from many injuries (January), so we were a bit forced to add players to the team, but I think the recruitment was really good, the players who come in have shown their level, with a good mentality.

“If you enter new players, the level increases. You could see part of the quality we have against PSG.”
