Zubimendi chooses surprise Arsenal number despite Spain choice is available

The move from Martin Zubimendi to Arsenal has finally been confirmed because the Spain International draws a five -year -old deal with the Gunners while he really leaves Sociedad for meadows new

Martin Zubimendi wears the No.36 shirt for Arsenal after completing his move the club. The Spaniard arrives from Real Sociedad in a £ 55 million deal and signed a five -year contract with the Gunners.

The 26-year-old arrives in North London as the second signing of Arsenal of the Summer, after fellow countryman Kepa Arrizabalaga on the Emirates. And the transfer marks the first major movement of the club in the summer market while Mikel Arteta tries to put together a team that can eventually go beyond Premier League-Tweede.

As an important signing, Zubimendi probably had some freedom when establishing his new shirt number. Zubimendi wore four on the back of his shirt for Real Sociedad in recent years – a figure currently occupied by Arsenal defender Ben White.

The international shirt number of the midfielder was available, but Zubimendi chose on this occasion against 18. The latter became available only a few days ago after Takehiro Tomiyasu had left the Emirates after the parties agreed to end his contract prematurely.

But Zubimendi's choice of 36 will require the young goalkeeper Tommy Setford, 19, the next term a new shirt. Last summer's signing from Ajax debuted in the Carabao Cup against Preston in 2024/25 and was regularly on the couch of Arsenal during their Champions League campaign.

However, it is the song that Zubimendi wore when breaking the Real Sociedad. And the Spaniard wants to take the shirt for his debut season with the Gunners.

Ismael Bennacer wore the song in 2015/16, while Emi Martinez held it for a season in 2012/13. Jonathan Djourou and Jermaine Pennant are among the first team selections that attract the shirt.

“Once I had made the decision to leave, I aimed my sights on Arsenal because I think their playing style fits me well,” said Zubimendi on his arrival in Arsenal.

“It is a young, highly motivated and ambitious team. They have shown their potential lately, and I believe that the best should come. As soon as you set foot here, you realize how big this club and this team are. Andrea [Berta] and Mikel [Arteta] Took great care of me and left me without a doubt.

“This is a huge moment in my career. It is the move I was looking for; one that I wanted to make. Of course it's a big change, but I'm ready to start.”
