AC Milan attacker Leao: Fonseca and I just didn’t work

There were hopes that the Portuguese forward would thrive in partnership with his compatriot, but things did not go as hoped.

Leao told La Gazzetta dello Sport: “I have nothing to say about our coach-player relationship, even though at the beginning we had to solve some situations – and I don't mean problems, but situations. He tried to do his job, apply his ideas and I think there is always something to learn.

“But it didn't work and whether he should have stayed or not is certainly not up to me. However, I can say that everyone did their very best and I wish Fonseca the best.”

When Leao was benched, he also said: “I think at least one explanation can be given for three consecutive benches, but sometimes coaches do that… It was the first time this happened to me in Milan and I have also learned from it.

“If it happens again, and I hope it doesn't because I always want to be on the field, I will be more aware of what I have to do: stay focused, don't go down or lose confidence in myself. The most important thing is to do our work at our best. Anyway: the past is the past and I look to the future with confidence.”
