Atletico Madrid has had a rather unpectacular second half of the season, but they had a moment of greatness in their La Liga collision against Real Sociedad in the Riyadhair Metropolitano.
A number of disappointing results in 2025 have seen Barcelona and Real Madrid Drop Atleti in the La Liga title race, and with four games to go, is the best where Diego Simeone's side can really hope is third in the rankings. A victory over La Real would have ensured that a big step was taken in the direction of that position that was completed, and they are very on track for a victory – and a big one.
It was the total massacre in the first half in the Metropolitano and it was caused by Alexander Sorloth. The Norwegian striker opened the score against his former club after seven minutes, and less than four minutes later he had added goals two and three.
According to MD, Sorloth's Hattrick lasted exactly three minutes and 57 seconds to reach, and he now has the record for the fastest hat trick in the history of La Liga. He surpassed David Villa, who lasted a little more than four minutes to score three times for Valencia against Athletic Club in 2006.
Sorloth also broke a record, because he scored his third in the 11th minute, he scored the earliest hat trick in the history of La Liga. And he wasn't even ready there, and he would find the back of the net in the half hour to score the fourth of the evening of his and Athleti.
Sorloth has had a rather unusual first season in Athleti. He is often used from the bank (which Simeone recently spoke about), but despite this he now has 17 goals in La Liga – which is the most among his teammates (Julian Alvarez is closest to 15). And he is now fourth in the Pichchi trophy race behind Robert Lewandowski, Kylian Mbappe and Ante Budimir.
