‘Chelsea fans have to trust us’ – Maresca issues rallying cry to Blues’ faithful

Enzo Maresca urged him to trust him with the supporters of Chelsea and to insist that the team “improves and does the right things this season”.

The blues were hunted by some parts of Stamford Bridge during Sunday's draw with relegation-threatened Ippswich City, in which they recovered from 2-0 down to save a point.

That was Chelsea's second consecutive Premier League and saw them slip from the Champions League qualifying positions to sixth place with six more games.

Nevertheless, Maresca's side is in a strong position to reach the semi-final of the Europa Conference League, on 3-0 against Legia Warsaw for their second stage on Thursday.

And the Italian, whose tactics and insistence on playing backs have recently been examined, has issued a rally cry to the supporters of the club.

“The message [is] with [the] fans [behind us]We are a better team, “he told reporters during his press conference before the competition.

“I fully understand that we as a team have to involve our fans. That is something that we could not do on Sunday, especially for those 20 or 25 minutes. It is also up to us to be good enough to involve our fans.

“I think we have proven this season [that we are progressing]Even if it is sometimes from the outside, it is hard to see. But I think the fans should trust us, the team and what the club is doing now.

“If Chelsea was not in the top four in the last two seasons – and this season Chelsea was in the top four for most of the year – that is great proof that the team improves and does the right things.

“For me, is that enough? No, because I want to fight for titles, fight for the Premier League and Champions League. It is pretty clear that the direction and style is the right one.

“Before Ipswich we were the third best defenders and fourth or fifth best attackers. After Ipswich we are upset and we will try to win more matches to reach the Champions League place.”
