UFC -Superster Dustin Poirier almost caused rare circumstances for his pension fight.
Dustin Poirier will receive his last UFC fight from a heroes in his last UFC fight against BMF title holder Max Holloway in New Orleans later this year. It is rare that the UFC provides a legend of Poirier's caliber a birthplace booking for a pension fight, but Poirier's unique career contains unique circumstances for his last game.
Poirier gets one last crack at the elusive BMF championship against Holloway before running away from the Octagon for the last time. Fortunately for Poirier, he has two earlier victories in Holloway, including in their interim light weight title competition in 2019.
After initial pension after a loss for Islam Makhachev on UFC 302, Poirier turned that attitude and committed himself to a final show in the Octagon. For his last appearance, Poirier tried to go out with a bang in a unique fighting environment.

Dustin Poirier had a wild idea for UFC Sendoff with four of the stars of the promotion
Before he secured the Holloway fight, Poirier met UFC CEO Dana White in Las Vegas to plot his send -off booking. Although the majority of Poirier's desired conditions were granted without problems for his pension fight, one of the largest was quickly set aside.
In a recent interview about the Ariel Helwani show, Poirier shared how a conversation with White almost reinforced a one-night tournament.
'I told [Dana] To do a BMF tournament, and I threw me, [Justin] Gaethje, Max [Holloway] And [Dan] Hooker, “Poirier unveiled.
'Me and Dana sat down in his office and talked about it, but he thought I was talking about one [few months style] Tournament, but I was talking about a one-night tournament.
“And [Dana] told me that nobody would punish that. I would be completely out to do a first round of 10 minutes if they didn't allow one night, five rounds each fight. Or a one-night tournament, three rounds each fight, there would be too many MMA rounds in one night for a man … I thought it would be a cool idea! “
Since UFC 17 has not organized a tournament-style event since UFC 17 in 1998 before White and Zuffa LLC bought the wrestling promotion. Calls for tournaments have been raised in recent years in the midst of the busy title photos in bantamweight, lightweight and welterweight.
But unfortunately for Poirier, all future tournaments will take place in the UFC Octagon after he has hung up the gloves. The Favorite of the UFC fan wants to make UFC 318 his last fight after a legendary run with the promotion in two weight classes.
Max Holloway was not the first choice of Dustin Poirier for UFC Retirement Fight
Before the Holloway trilogy was presented to Poirier, the UFC -Superster wanted a fight with one of the other two top light weights for its last fight. As discussed in recent interviews with Mike Bohn by Ariel Helwani and MMA Junkie, Poirier focused on a confrontation with Ilia Topuria or two -time rival Justin Gaethje for his retirement.
Gaethje defeated Rafael Fiziev most recently on UFC 313 to return to the win column after losing the BMF belt at UFC 300. In the meantime, Topuria will probably remain for the next lightweight defending defense of Makhachev, possibly on UFC 317 in June.
Poirier wants to regain the form that would see him stop with Benoit Saint-Denis on UFC 299 last year. The victory over Saint-Denis pushed him to his third lightweight title shot before he lost to Makhakev last June.
