‘I loved being a modern gladiator’ – Muller receives emotional Bayern send-off

Thomas Muller told the supporters of Bayern Munich that he liked to play the role of a “modern gladiator” after receiving an emotional broadcast of the Bundesliga champions.

Muller played his last home game for Bayern-Die last week the Bundesliga title, while they beat Borussia Monchengladbach 2-0 on Saturday.

Michael Olise founded Harry Kane for his 25th Bundesliga target of the season before he poured the ball in the 90th minute to seal a comfortable victory in front of Vincent Kompany.

But the day was Van Muller, who started in an attacking role in midfield and received a delicious ovation when he was withdrawn for Serge Gnabry in the 84th minute.

Muller first came to Bayern at the age of 10 and helped them in 13 Bundesliga titles, six DFB-Pokal victories, eight DFL-SUPERCUPS and two champions competitions since his senior debut in 2008.

After the game, Bayern was presented with the Bundesliga trophy, while after one goal supporters left a gigantic banner with the name of Muller and the words: “For 25 years, everything for our colors!”

Muller took a microphone in the midst of the parties to address the crowd and said: “I loved being a modern gladiator.

“But I am not sad. I look forward to what is waiting, although it will not be half as good!

“We all knew that this moment would come. For many, including myself, it is a difficult moment, but also a beautiful one. The appreciation you gave me is unique.”

Muller – who was tipped to move to MLS after Bayern had chosen against the renewal of his contract – made his 502nd Bundesliga appearance on Saturday.

Last month Muller only became the 13th player who made 500 Bundesliga performances and the fourth to do this with all his trips for a single club.

Karl-Heinz Korbel (602 matches for Eintracht Frankfurt), Manfred Kaltz (581 for Hamburg) and Michael Lameck (518 for Bochum) are the only other men of one club that touch that brand.
