Manchester United is a seasoning weak in the back of another defeat and Ruben Amorim is confronted with new questions about his work as far as the head coach at Old Trafford
Manchester United licks their wounds again after another chestnut defeat to Newcastle on Sunday afternoon.
Captain Bruno Fernandes may have said that the team showed “personality” despite losing 4-1 in St James' Park, but the result leaves Ruben Amorim's team three points for the 17th position.
And with the second stage of their evenly balanced Europa League quarter final against Lyon to come on Thursday evening, there is no time for United to feel sorry for himself. The victory in Europe can offer the club a route to the Champions League – and increase the treasury to strengthen Amorim's team in the summer.
Here are the big stories at the start of a crucial week at United.
“I'm the Bruno”
Bruno Guimaraes sent a non-ZO-Subtiel message to Bruno Fernandes after scoring the fourth goal of Newcastle against Manchester United on Sunday. The newcastle captain ended calmly past Altay Bayindir after the United goalkeeper Joelinton could not release with his attempted pass and he celebrated passionately.
The last goal put the icing on the cake of the emphatic second half of Newcastle in their 4-1 victory in St James' Park. And Guimaraes was not shy to make his feelings heard while he repeatedly shouted: “I am the Bruno” while he points to his chest and the name on the back of his shirt before he kissed the badge.
Record Breakers
The Manchester United side of Ruben Amorim will officially post the worst show of the club in the Premier League era. The defeat in Newcastle means that they can no longer reach the previous low amount of points – which was 58.
Even a fantastic end of the season would see them hit 56 points – which will be the lowest total that they have posted in more than 30 years. United has set a number of unwanted records this period and it has long looked like they will surpass eighth place for all the wrong reasons for the last term.
Erik ten Hag was chairman of that effort, but it now looks like the club will end in the bottom half for the first time.
Amorim Future
The Red Devils have taken only 23 points of a possible 63 in the Premier League since Ruben Amorim took the lead, with the club Erik ten Hag firing in October.
The pocket question may sound premature, especially given the attempts of Amorim to radically change the playing style of the Red Devils and with so many players who underperform it, but Sir Jim Ratcliffe has established a precedent.
With all this in mind, and if some of the supporters evoke that the ax would be reused, we asked Mirror Football's writers the impending question for our big debate: should Amorim be fired?
