Ruben Amorim is on track to lead Manchester United to their worst Premier League finish and has emphasized the need for reinforcements during the summer transfer window
Ruben Amorim insists that Manchester United must improve in any position. The head coach described his team as the worst of United ever after a January defeat against Brighton, and the club is on track for their worst finish ever in the Premier League era.
In anticipation of the quarter -final second stage on Thursday from the Europa League against Lyon, Amorim was asked about replacing goalkeeper Andre Onana. However, he argued that the shortcomings of the team are much deeper.
“We must improve any position on the field; goalkeeper is the same,” the head coach told reporters. “If our team scores more goals and our strikers are better, we will defend better.
“Sometimes you have a season in which you support it. We are going to make that evaluation for every position in the team.”
United is in the table 14th with six more games, even if they win all six of those competitions, they will fail to fall for their lowest Premier League points return of 58, achieved during the 2021-22 season.
Amorim confirmed that Onana will return in goal for the second stage on Thursday. The keeper was chosen for guilt after spilling the ball at the feet of Lyon's Rayan Cherki for a late equalizer and was on Sunday's Premier League match in Newcastle United.
“I think as a former coach and a player I try to do things that can help a player in this situation,” Amorim said. “We are talking about physical management of players, but we also have to manage them mentally. This week my thinking was to turn [Andre] Onana to play. “
United will be without Matthijs de Ligt and Joshua Zirkzee for Lyon's visit to Old Trafford on Thursday evening. De Ligt is expected within a few weeks, after he has not played since 1 April, but his colleague -Dutch Internationale Zirkzee will no longer perform this period.
“Joshua is out for the season,” Amorim confirmed. “He will no longer play this season. We have to prepare him for the following season. It's hard for a player to stop, but it's football. He must be ready to recover.”
Zirkzee was one of the scorers from United in the first stage in France, with Leny Yoro also on goal. However, goals from Thiago Almada and Cherki leave the game ready in a huge way.
If United makes it, they will be confronted with Athletic Club of Rangers in the semi -final. Their first stage in Glasgow ended aimlessly, with rangers who held up, despite a first half of a red card for Robin Propper.
