Manchester United is in the middle of their worst campaign ever in the Premier League era, but the side of Ruben Amorim will still try to land big names in the summer transfer window
They toiled to their worst season in the Premier League history and can only end the campaign one place above the relegation zone. But the chase of Manchester United and probably catching Victor Osimhen from Napoli and Matheus Cunha from Wolves shows that the fallen giants have not lost their pulling power.
It says everything about the less random and more strategic approach to recruitment that United has identified their two most important transfer goals and moves quickly to get them over the line as quickly as possible.
United can win the Europa League this season and can offer new registrations of the Signings Champions League in the next term. But even if they fall short in that respect, they can still attract top players, despite the constant unrest on and next to the field at Old Trafford, just like in 2016, who sign Paul Pogba for a club record £ 89 million, although they could only offer Europe League football.
In the Post-Sir Alex Ferguson era, United has spread more than £ 1 billion over insufficient and often vanity signs, with Pogba one of these. But there is now a more considered approach performed by Ratcliffe and his football operation team.
The throwing away of Marcus Rashford, Antony and Jadon Sancho on loan for the rest of the season will probably lead to permanent outputs for all three this summer, with Casemiro and Alejandro Garnacho also potential as a United Look to finance income to finance the income.
If United succeeds in carrying out a successful transfer window this summer, with the acquisition of Osimhen and Cunha, plus two or three other important goals, could be a completely different proposition for Amorim and his team next season.
United has already added to their team this season, with the arrival of January of versatile wing-back Patrick Dorgu and Centrum-Back Ayden Heaven, with a central midfielder on Amorim's wish list, as well as a keeper, with Andre Onana's constant high-profile mistakes that mark him as a liability instead of an asset.
Nevertheless, a proven goal scorer is the priority this summer, where United has scored a meager 38 goals in 33 Premier League matches, with a goal difference of minus eight, so that they remain 14th in the table. Against that background, United has assessed the market for strikers, with Amorim Osimhen viewing – currently on loan in Galatasaray – as the attacker to resolve the goal of drought.
In addition to his proven scoring bravery – he has 29 goals of 34 games this season – Osimhen is on his way to the last year of his contract with Napoli, with United Trust that they could land him for considerably less than his £ 65 million release clause. In addition to Osimhen, United looks at Ipswich striker Liam Delap and RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko, but Nigeria International is seen as Amorim's preferred choice.
The purchasing power of United in the summer window will increase if they can win the Europa League and with it a ticket of £ 100 million for the Champions League, but with player sales they should be able to finance movements for Osimhen and Cunha.
After a decade plus too high spending on players who do not fit to wear the famous red shirt, United starts to recruit diligently and wisely.
Given the chaos of this season, it will take time before the transfer activities of this summer yield immediate results, but United makes daring explanations with their goals and it is unlikely that it will suffer a catastrophic campaign if it again.
