Captain Virgil van Dijk and midfielder Frenkie de Jong have both been released from their international duties this week and will not travel for the Netherlands' final Nations League group match against Bosnia & Herzegovina, coach Ronald Koeman said.

“It is better for both Frenkie and Virgil that they leave the training camp at this time,” Koeman said in a statement on Monday.

“That decision was made on medical grounds, where the interests of the players were of course paramount.”

The Dutch will not call up any replacements, while Koeman still has 23 players to choose from for Tuesday's Group A3 match in Zenica.

Both De Jong and Van Dijk played in Saturday's 4-0 win over Hungary in Amsterdam, helping the Dutch team secure second place in the group and progress to the quarter-finals of the Nations League in March.

Van Dijk played the full 90 minutes, while De Jong was substituted after 68 minutes.

An early return – and therefore more time to recuperate – will be a boost for Liverpool fans, with a huge few weeks of football ahead.

After a clash with Southampton last weekend, the Reds will take on Real Madrid, Manchester City, Newcastle and Everton in a series of matches that will prove exhausting on all fronts for Arne Slot's side.

It was the first match back in the Dutch national team in thirteen months for De Jong, who suffered from an ankle injury last season and missed the European Championship in Germany this year.

On Saturday, the Barcelona midfielder said he 'still needs some time' to find his form, although his return to the Dutch team received positive reviews.
