West Ham 1 Southampton 1: Saints equal Derby’s lowest Premier League points tally with late leveller

Southampton was saved on shocking fashion from more Premier League -'s.

Lesley Ugochukwu hit in the 93rd minute to numb West Ham, to grab a point and match the record of Derby as the worst preme team of all time.

It is not much comfort in this terrible season, but it will mean a lot for these Saints team and interim boss Simon Rusk.

And it will hurt Graham Potter, no end.

The second half of Jarrod Bowen seemed to have won a first victory for the Hammers since February, but they now have none in six.

And questions are asked to their manager.

Potter has sharpened West Ham since the replacement of Julen Lopetegui in January, but there is little to be enthusiastic about.

He will point to a crooked team as an explanation that and the need for a preseason to get things going.

But the fans, and his bosses, want to see something to become enthusiastic for the next term before that time – and this certainly did not help.

Niclas Fullkrug got his first start since he returned from an injury and the German should have ended the Hamers after just four minutes.

Lucas Paqueta played a ball to the nearby pole where the striker for Jan Bednarek hit and was well stopped by Aaron Ramsdale.

That was about the attacking intention of West Ham over a flat 45 minutes in which saints were the better side.

Kyle Walker-Peters flashed a big chance of the distant pole before Kamaldeen Sulemana hit the bar.

West Ham was sent angry by the tunnel to a choir and must have come out of it with a few loud words from Potter in their ears while they walked ahead within a few minutes.

From a Southampton corner, West Ham finally started and looked dangerous.

Mohammed Kudus just gathered the ball in his own half and fed Fullkrug.

The rush hour and found the man of England Bowen to the right of him. The Hammers skipper collected, cut in the defense of the saints and shot at the far corner.

Ramsdale got a soft hand in the ball, but could not stop finding the back of the net.

The return of Fullkrug helped the forward line. He has one goal since the return and has given Bowen much needed support.

But he will need more help next season and, as always in the London Stadium, a new striker will be on the target in the summer.

West Ham played with more life from there, where Jan Bednarek had to block from Kudus after the hosts had stolen the ball halfway before Paqueta saw an effort deflected by Lesley Ugochukwu.

Southampton was open and suffered as a result.

They were delivered for a second when Fullkrug was punished for the ram of Ramsdale in a corner, so that the keeper threw the ball into his own net.

Alphonse Areola stopped Jack Stephens' attempt from the edge of the box while Saints was looking for a way back.

Potter sent teenage player Luis Guilherme to try to stretch the lead and the Brazilian quickly pulled a rescue from Ramsdale.

But Saints' own teenager, Tyler Dibbling, should have achieved things with ten minutes to achieve.

Free in the box and on the goal, the frontwards released well over the bar somehow.

However, they kept pushing, but still played while Hammers fans moaned about their inability to get out.

Saints were finally deeply rewarded after an excellent run by Walker-Peters, who makes its way through the Hammers defense.

The right back seemed to cross low and his ball woke up from Max Kilman and fell perfectly for Ugochukwu to hit home.

It has been a terrible season on the south coast that nobody will soon forget, but they will not be alone as the worst team of all time.
