Borussia Dortmund star Serhou Guirassy became the highest scoring African player in one Champions League campaign on Tuesday evening, but the German side still collapsed from the competition.
Dortmund took on Barcelona in the second stage of their Champions League quart final in Signal Iduna Park.
They were confronted from the start with a difficult task, given the Catalan giants gave a 4-0 aggregated lead of the first stage of last week after a dominant performance.
But Dortmund started the game well and after a few early chances, Niko Kovac's side took the lead thanks to Guirassy's demolished penalty.
Guirassy, who came to Dortmund of Stuttgart last summer for £ 15.4 million, added a strike early in the second half after he had hit Ramy Bensebaini's header over the goal of a corner.
The disaster, however, struck when Bensebaini, under pressure from Robert Lewandowski, turned the cut of Fermin Lopez into his own net.
Kovac's side continued to fight everywhere and Guirassy bounced on a defensive error to emphatically shoot home to complete his hat trick and take the score again a total of 5-3.
Barcelona, however, kept forward in six seasons to their first semi-final of the Champions League.
Nevertheless, Guirassy collected his count in the competition of this season into an incredible 13 goals in 14 games with his hat trick.
In the process, the 29-year-old, who previously played in the tournament with Rennes in 2020-21, broke the record for most goals scored by an African player in one Champions League campaign.
This was previously held by Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, who both delivered 10 times in the Run from Liverpool to the Champions League final in 2017-18.
Guirassy also became the first Dortmund player to score 13 goals in one Champions League campaign.
He is in the same way of the score cards in this year's competition after he gone past Harry Kane (10), Lewandowski (11) and Raphinha (12) on Tuesday.
In the meantime, Barcelona Inter Milan or Bayern Munich is playing in the last four, with the Italian side with a 2-1 lead of the first stage of last week.
