Gerard Pique responds after house is vandalised – ‘Suffocating the Pyrenees’
Barcelona icon and Andorra owner Gerard Pique has come under fire in Spain's northernmost border with France after a group called Arran Jovent [Arran Youth] destroyed his property in La Cerdanya. The Pyrenees town is part of the Vall d'Aran, which has its own language and autonomous authority, and is a popular spot for luxury skiing in Spain.
Pique is one of many wealthy people who own property in the area and flee to La Cerdanya in winter for weekend skiing or holidays. The area is next to Andorra, where many of Spain's rich and famous also own property due to lower taxes.
“We point out the luxury residence of Gerard Pique in La Cerdanya. Let us go on the offensive against the tourist monoculture that is suffocating the Pyrenees, against the chicans, rentiers and speculators who make our lives a misery. These posh bastards, we are not your decoration,” read a statement from 'Arran Jovent' [Arran youth].
Pique spoke about the case on the radio, despite not wanting to publicize it.
“I was in Turin and I saw it, but I don't want to attach too much importance to it because ultimately this is what they want. “We will clean it up and that's it, there is no reason to make any more fuss about it,” he told RAC1 (via Sport).
“Far from it,” he said when asked if he was annoyed by their protest. “I tell you, what they want is promotion and to be talked about, so we have to give them as little as possible. Don't know [if I will make a police complaint]we had a lot of fuss in Turin yesterday and I haven't had much time to think about it.
