The leaking defense of Olympique de Marseille came on Saturday evening when Monaco placed three unanswered goals along their Champions League rivals in the Stade Louis II.
Marseille suffers a selection crisis at the back with Leonardo Balerdi and Luiz Felipe Out for the near future, and during the weekend this led Roberto de Zerbi a back five-round without any recessed center-backs. The only center-back in the MatchDay team, Derek Cornelius, remained on the couch as an unused replacement.
This crisis is partly responsible for the poorly defensive record of Marseille, because they have now admitted 41 goals in 29 games (the second worst record in the upper half of the table after Stade Brestois). According to Stats du Foot, this is the worst count of Marseille in this phase of the season since the 1984/85 season, where they have admitted 51 goals in 29 games.
Marseille holds their future with five games of the season to play. The club occupies third place and the remaining automatic degree of qualification of Champions League, but with Olympique Lyonnais only one point behind them, they have to quickly reconsider their form of early season.
