Southampton 0-0 Manchester City: Guardiola’s men held in bore draw

Manchester City was held up to a 0-0 draw by Southampton in St Mary's Stadium, because they missed the chance to really anchor their UEFA Champions League qualifiers.

Saints did not succeed in gathering a single shot on goal, and only two in general, in a competition where City sniffed and puffed but never really did enough to blow the door on Saturday.

Jeremy Doku's half-time introduction did at least open and he founded Bernardo Silva for a chance that Jack Stephens did well to block.

Omar Marmoush also cracked the bar in injury time when the side of Pep Guardiola remained frustrated against the bottom of the competition.

A point means that the city is third and four points free from the sixth place Nottingham Forest while watching a place in the top five, while Southampton switches to 12 points one than the lowest Premier League count recorded by Derby County in 2007-08.

There was little to talk about in a turgid first half, but the introduction of Doku after the break led him to cut one back for Silva to dig one goal that Stephens hacked in safety.

An other ineffective Erling Haaland laid one on a sign for replacements Nico O'Reilly and Savinho, who had exceeded their sports in the area, while Aaron Ramsdale became printer in the final phase to deny Ruben Dias and Kevin De Bruyne.

Ramsdale needed the help of the bar to keep Marmoush's strike out in the area while the city was kept a frustrating stalemate.

Debrief data: Saints Avoid unwanted history as a professional boating city pay the price

It has been a season to forget for saints, but their spicy draw here means that they now have 12 points and avoid the joint Lowest Premier League count in one season (Derby County in 2007-08, 11).

For City it was really a day of frustration and they had 26 shots, which represent their most in a Premier League match without scoring since July 2020 – happened to be against the saints in St Mary's.

City has therefore not scored in four of their previous 11 Premier League matches, like many spaces such as in their previous 55 in the competition.

Moreover, they did not score this season in Six Premier League matches, their most in one campaign of a top flight since 2015-16 (eight).

It is also the first time that City has not succeeded in beating a side that for the first time since November 2015 (0-0 versus Aston Villa) beating a side that started the daily base in the Premier League, with the last time they could not score against such an opponent.
