Barcelona earmark surprise position for summer transfer plans

Like most clubs, Barcelona is in the middle of their planning for the summer transfer window, and a surprising shift in their plans has been reported. The Blaugrana is still not sure of their ability to strengthen this summer because of their salary limit.

The head of a recent MD report on their transfer plans was that Barcelona will no longer chase winger Nico Williams this summer, or indeed a left wing player this summer. The Blaugrana are strongly connected to both Williams and Luis Diaz in the past year, but it seems that both have been slipped out of the agenda.

With Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres who both perform well in the middle, Barcelona will continue without a number nine signing, their search for Lewandowski's successor will postpone until next year. Perhaps the most surprising part of their transfer shift are the positions they will pursue.

It was known that Barcelona wants a right back as an alternative to Jules Kounde, and if Andreas Christensen and Ronald Araujo would leave, the Blaugrana agreed with Jonathan Tah. But after the rise of Marc Casado and Marc Bernal, in combination with the residual of Frenkie de Jong, few Barcelona saw another midfielder this summer.

The opportunities are already hard to find in the middle of the field, with Pedri, De Jong and Dani Olmo apparently the first choice. Fermin Lopez, Gavi, Pablo Torre Casado and Bernal are all strong alternatives for that trio, if somewhat similar in the roles they play.

The Blaugrana was strongly connected to a central midfielder last summer when Barcelona struggled without Sergio Busquets. It was recently reported that free agent Thomas Partey would like a move to Barcelona, while Tijjani Reijnders this season under the AC Milan is impressed by the Blaugrana, perhaps especially during their victory over Real Madrid.
